Production of {ital {phi}} mesons in central {sup {bold 28}}Si{bold +}{sup {bold 196}}Au collisions at 14.6{ital A} GeV/{ital c}

Production of the {phi} meson in central Si+Au collisions has been measured by {ital E}859 at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron by selecting events with identified {ital K}{sup +}{ital K}{sup {minus}} pairs. The mass and width of the {phi}, obtained from the invariant mass distribution of kaon pairs, are consistent with those of free {phi} mesons. The transverse mass and rapidity distributions are presented. The inverse slope parameter for an exponential fit to the invariant transverse mass distribution is 179{plus_minus}10{plus_minus}17 MeV. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
