Electron affinity of Pa by 7{ital p} attachment and hyperfine structure constants for Pa{sup {minus}}

Valence shell relativistic configuration interaction calculations for the 7{ital p} attachment to the Pa I ground state yield one bound state, viz., Pa{sup {minus}} 5{ital f}{sup 2}6{ital d}7{ital s}{sup 2}7{ital p} {ital J}=6, with electron affinity of 0.222 eV. We found no other {ital J}{close_quote}s for this configuration to be bound, nor are any of the Pa{sup {minus}} 5{ital f}{sup 2}6{ital d}{sup 2}7{ital s}{sup 2} levels expected to be bound. The hyperfine structure constants for the {sup 231}Pa{sup {minus}} bound state are {ital A}=741.3 MHz and {ital B}=1309 MHz. Although the core-valence correlation effects are absent the agreement between the theory (4736 cm{sup {minus}1}) and experiment (4121 cm{sup {minus}1}) for the position of the first excited state of Pa is good (15{percent}). We review our previous studies for the {ital np} attachment in rare earths to systematically analyze the binding of {ital np}{sub 1/2} and {ital np}{sub 3/2} electrons, in these species. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
