An electrostatic ion-acoustic surface wave propagating along the boundary of a semi-infinite plasma is considered. It is shown that a nonlinear Schr{umlt o}dinger equation can describe the development of the wave amplitude. The self-focusing length of a wave beam is estimated. {copyright} {ital 1996 American Institute of Physics.}
