Deep inelastic scattering and diffraction at HERA

Recent results on deep inelastic scattering and diffraction at HERA obtained by the H1 and ZEUS experiments are presented. The proton structure function {ital F}{sub 2} has been measured with the 1994 data in a new kinematic region of {ital Q}{sup 2}{approx_gt}2 GeV{sup 2} and {ital x}{approx_gt}4.5{times}10{sup {minus}5}. The rise in {ital F}{sub 2} with decreasing {ital x} persists. Results on the determination of the gluon momentum density of the proton are also presented. The diffractive structure function has been measured using large rapidity gap events. The results are interpreted in terms of the pomeron structure. {copyright} {ital 1996 American Institute of Physics.}
