Ultra-high-gradient particle acceleration on the order of {approximately}30 GeV/m has been demonstrated owing to the laser wakefield acceleration mechanism driven by an intense ultra-short laser pulse in an underdense plasma. The development of ultra-high-gradient particle accelerators is focused on achieving high-energy particle acceleration in a compact-size machine, using compact high-intensity lasers, known as table-top-terawatt (T{sup 3}) lasers. We report on our current project for the development of a laser wakefield accelerator (LWFA) capable of acceleration up to GeV energies using a 2 TW, 100 fs T{sup 3} laser system. We further propose the research and development of a possible LWFA to achieve TeV energies on the order of {approximately}meters, based on a nonlinear resonant scheme. {copyright} {ital 1996 American Institute of Physics.}
