A high-density regime of the laser wakefield accelerator is reviewed in which enhanced acceleration is achieved via resonant self-modulation of the laser pulse. This requires laser power in excess of the critical power for optical guiding and a plasma wavelength short compared to the laser pulse-length. The evolution of the laser pulse is described, including a discussion of self-modulation and laser-hose instabilities. Examples of self-modulated laser wakefield accelerators are presented. {copyright} {ital 1996 American Institute of Physics.}
