Coupled bunch instability is one of the current limiting factor of the storage ring in multi-bunch operation. This instability occurs when the higher order mode (HOM) frequency of the cavity happens to be near the multiple of the revolution frequency. In designing the SPring-8 rf acceleration system, special care is taken to reduce the effect. Cavity shape is optimized in reducing the HOM impedances, and the cures against coupled bunch instabilities are introduced and explained. {copyright} {ital 1996 American Institute of Physics.}
