Photoelectron spectra of mass-selected negatively charged bare Ni{sub {ital n}}{sup {minus}} and Pt{sub {ital n}}{sup {minus}} clusters are compared with the spectra of Ni{sub {ital n}}(CO){sub {ital m}} and Pt{sub {ital n}}(CO){sub {ital m}}{sup {minus}} clusters. The spectra indicate that saturation with CO is caused by the formation of an electronic closed shell and not due to steric hindrance as on a surface, and that the strength of the {pi} backdonation of the CO chemisorption bond to a small particle is stronger than to a surface. The antibonding metal ({ital d}{sub {ital z}{sup 2}}-5{sigma}) orbital resulting from the interaction of the CO 5{sigma} with the metal {ital d}{sub {ital z}{sup 2}} orbitals is directly observed for Ni{sub 1}(CO){sub 3}{sup {minus}}. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
