A gauge model of effective nuclear fields is formulated, the underlying symmetry group being U{sub em}(1) x U{sub {omega}}(1) x SU(2) x SU(2). The {omega}, {rho}, and axial-meson fields, as well as an electromagnetic field, appear as gauge fields that maintain local symmetry. The pion is the only Goldstone particle of the model. The Higgs sector is formed by three fields: a space-time scalar isotopic bispinor, a chiral scalar {sigma}, and a (pseudo)scalar isoscalar {summation} field. Calculations for symmetric nuclear matter are carried out for m{sub {sigma}} {yields} {infinity}. The results satisfactorily reproduce the saturation properties of nuclear matter. The role of 2{pi} exchange in the isoscalar channel is discussed. 18 refs., 3 tabs.
