Lead concentrations in the environment are of critical concern due to potential health risks. The maximum acceptable level of lead in water, set by the Environmental Protection Agency, is 15 ppb. Analysis of household waters supplied by submersible pumps and municipalities have been performed, and lead levels of 1-20 ppb were detected. Analyses were performed using atomic absorption spectrometry. Preconcentration of the aqueous samples using the ammonium pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate chelation/methyl isobutyl ketone extraction method was necessary to analyze using flame AA analysis.
