Dynamic shape asymmetry in soft nuclei

Nuclear models predict a redistribution of the intraband-interband {ital E}2 strength related to low-spin yrast states when the mean shape asymmetry {l_angle}{gamma}{r_angle} varies with spin. Thereby, a reduction of the yrast intraband {ital E}2 strength may result. Possible evidence for such a reduction is observed in {sup 128}Ba and is interpreted as a variation of the shape asymmetry {l_angle}{gamma}{r_angle} with increasing spin. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
