We study high-lying {sup 1}S doubly excited states (DES) of helium-like systems with principal quantum numbers N,n>>1. We calculate accurate eigenfunctions and eigenenergies using a large scale basis expansion and employing stabilization and complex rotation techniques. The wavefunctions are analyzed by projection onto three perpendicular planes of hyperspherical coordinates. We find the wavefunctions to display a regular pattern of nodal lines in a new coordinate system which differs from both the hyperspherical and molecular coordinates. Using this approximate separability, we derive a simple WKB formula for the position of all symmetrically excited {sup 1}S resonances which is in excellent agreement with the quantal calculation.
