Rotationally resolved threshold photoionization using coherent VUV radiation

Threshold photoelectron spectroscopy based on pulsed field ionization (PFI) has been used in conjunction with a VUV laser source to obtain the rovibronic; distributions of molecular cations following single photon ionization. The nascent rotational state distribution of the molecular ion reflects the exchanges of energy and angular momentum in the {open_quotes}scattering{close_quotes} of the photoexcited electron with the anisotropic molecular ion potential. Rotationally resolved studies on several linear molecules (O{sub 2}, HCl, OH (OD), NO, N{sub 2}O) have examined the propensities for large angular momentum transfers as well as the effects of resonance phenomena, ie. shape resonances and field induced autoionization. For photoionization of non-linear molecules (H{sub 2}O, H{sub 2}S, CH{sub 3} and CH{sub 2}O), transitions between symmetric or asymmetric top levels involving the rotational angular momentum projections, K{sub a}, K{sub b} and K{sub c}, permit resolution of the photoelectron continua according to molecular symmetry. These latter studies also probe symmetry selection rules governing rotational photoionization transitions for related molecules which conform to different top limits (oblate, prolate) or symmetry point groups.
