Time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy is used to determine the rates of alignment destroying collisions of the Ne I 3p{prime}[1/2]{sub 1} level in a typical lifetime experiment when using polarizers in the excitation and observation channel. Objects of this investigation are collisions with neon ground state atoms, electrons and ions. The neon atoms under investigation are prepared in a hollow cathode discharge and the selective excitation of the Ne I 3p{prime}[1/2]{sub 1} level is performed by subnanosecond pulses emitted from a distributed feedback dye laser. The linear polarized laser light produces an alignment in the upper Ne I 3p{prime}[1/2]{sub 1} level population that is destroyed by collisions with other neon atoms in the ground state and also by electrons and ions that are present in the observation volume. From these measurements a cross section of alignment destroying collisions of {sigma}{sub 2}{sup coll}=3.3(8) 10{sup -19} m{sup 2} with neon atoms in the ground state is observed for this specific neon I level.
