State-selective single-electron capture in low-energy collisions of Ar{sup q+} ions with Ar (q = 6-8)
- Western Michigan Univ., Kalamazoo, MI (United States)
Single-electron capture has been studied for collisions of Ar{sup q+} with Ar using translational energy-gain spectroscopy technique at collision energies of 50 qeV (q = 6-8, where q is the projectile charge state) and scattering angles between 0{degrees} and 3{degrees}. The translational energy-gain spectra show that only a few final states were selectively populated depending on the charge state of the projectile. For Ar{sup 6+} - Ar, Ar{sup 7+} - Ar, and Ar{sup 8+} - Ar collisions the dominant reaction channels are due respectively to capture into excited states 5s, 5d and 5s5d of Ar{sub q-1}. The differential cross sections for these collisions will be discussed on the basis of a semi-classical curve-crossing model employing Coulomb potential energy curves. Additional measurements of double-differential cross sections compared with available measurements and reaction windows based on the Multichannel Landau-Zener model will also be presented.
