We use a combination of the frame transformation theory, Green`s function method, and hyperspherical approach to calculate the photodetachment of H{sup -} above the H(n=2) threshold in an external electric field. The cross section in the region of the shape resonance increases with increasing electric field. For light linearly polarized along the static field direction, this enhancement is much stronger than for circular polarization. Ripples in the total H(n=2) cross section due to interference effects are masked by the shape resonance. However the cross section for excitation of the m=1 Stark substate by circularly polarized light exhibits pronounced structure induced by the electric field. We predict nonmonotonic dependence of the width of the {sup 1}P shape resonance on the electric field. Overall, this resonance exhibits very stable behavior for fields up to 1 MV/cm.
