We report absolute partial electron-impact ionization cross sections measured using a time-of-flight mass spectrometer with position-sensitive detection. The design and performance of the apparatus are presented. Two-dimensional plots combining information from time-of-flight and ion impact location on the detector demonstrate the complete collection of all energetic ions produced in dissociative ionization of molecules. We report new results for ionization of argon to produce Ar{sup +}, Ar{sup 2+}, Ar{sup 3+}, and Ar{sup 4+} and for dissociative ionization of N{sub 2} giving absolute cross sections for production of N{sub 2}{sup +}, and the sum of the absolute cross sections for the production of N{sup +} and N{sub 2}{sup 2+} for electron energies between threshold 2 and 1 keV. We present an analysis of the position-sensitive TOF spectrometer data that gives information on the energy distribution of dissociatively produced fragment ions.
