Theoretical studies of non-resonant vibrational excitation of N{sub 2} by low-energy electron impact
The recent publication of new crossed-beam measurements of low-energy e-N{sub 2} vibrational excitation cross sectional together with uncertainties about existing values deduced from transport analysis of data taken in swarm experiments have stimulated renewed theoretical effort on electronically elastic collisions involving this prototypical electron-homonuclear system. We have extended our prior vibrational close-coupling calculations on e-H{sub 2} to this system, using a near-Hartree-Fock representation of the target and treatments of exchange and correlation/polarization effects that have been fully tested in other contexts, as a first step towards clarifying the experimental situation and generating a reliable data base for non-resonant low-energy e-N{sub 2} scattering.
