Sharp microwave frequency dependence in {open_quotes}ionization{close_quotes} of 3d H atoms and the effect of additive noise

For weak broadband (26-40 GHz) added shot noise (rms amplitude F{sub n} {approx_equal} 0.5 V/cm, <5% of the coherent amplitude F), we saw sharp variations around {nu}=30 GHz in e.g., F(10%) for 10%-{open_quotes}ionization{close_quotes} probability (n-cutoff {approx_equal} 89) of n{sub 0}=57 3d H atoms. Sharp means varying {nu} {approx_lt} 1/3 of the Fourier bandwidth 0.35 GHz of the 4.3 ns long half-sinewave pulseshape. Increased noise lowered (raised) F(10%) near sharp maxima (minima). (For some other cases noise did very little.) F{sub n} {approx_equal} 2.2 V/cm. suppressed the sharp {nu}-variation of F(10%). Our bound-basis integration of the 1d Schrodinger equation reproduces the results well, including influence of noise. Leopold, Richards, and Jensen are developing theory for a perturbed pendulum effective Hamiltonian H{sub eff} locally describing the dynamics at the classical nonlinear resonance island centered near n{sub 0}{sup 3}{omega}=1. Our data may be the first spectroscopic glimpse of novel quantal states of H{sub eff}.
