Predissociation in O{sub 2}B{sup 3}{Sigma}{sub u}{sup -} (v=0,2)
Linewidths and line positions have been measured in the B{sup 3}{Sigma}{sub u}{sup -}(v{prime}){l_arrow}X{sup 3}{Sigma}{sub g}{sup - }(v{double_prime}) Schumann-Runge absorption bands (v{prime},v{double_prime}) = (0,9), (0,10), (0,21), (2,10), and (2,22) using laser-induced fluorescence. The absorbing levels are generated by the reaction of O({sup 1}D) with O{sub 3} in a flow system. The measured linewidths are found to vary considerably among the rovibrational and fine structure levels of the B state, encompassing a range of 0.09-0.34 cm{sup -1} in v{prime}=0 and 0.4-1.4 cm{sup -1} in v{prime}=2. Orbit-rotational coupling of the B state to the O({sup 3}P) + O({sup 3}P) continuum in addition to spin-orbit coupling is found to be crucial to explaining the predissociation rates even in low rotational levels. The measured line positions now allow definition of the X state fine structure splittings to v{double_prime}=22. Comparison will be made with previous measurements of linewidths and molecular constants.
