The heuristic model of flux flow and flux cutting in a current-carrying type-II superconductor in the presence of axial magnetic field advanced by G. E. Marsh [Phys. Rev. B {bold 50}, 571 (1994)] is reconsidered on the basis of exact solutions for vortex ring and helix. It is shown that there are no grounds for the new dissipation cycle proposed by the author. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
