Search for diffractive dissociation of a long-lived {ital H} dibaryon

We have searched for long-lived {ital H} dibaryons (six-quark {ital uuddss} states) in a neutral beam produced by 24.1 GeV/{ital c} {ital p}-Pt collisions. The signature was exclusive {Lambda}{sup 0}{Lambda}{sup 0} production from diffractive dissociation of {ital H}{close_quote}s striking a plastic scintillator. We observed 40 {Lambda}{sup 0}{Lambda}{sup 0} events with a background of 3.2 events, but see no evidence of {ital H} dissociation. Using our additional observation of 187{plus_minus}39 {Lambda}{sup 0}{ital K}{sup 0}{sub {ital S}} events produced by coherent diffractive dissociation of neutrons from carbon for normalization, we place an upper limit of 1 mb/sr on the production of {ital H}{close_quote}s with lifetimes {approx_gt}10{sup {minus}8}s. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
