Fatigue crack initiation and propagation were studied on compact tension specimens of pure copper single crystals having [110] tensile axis. Two stages of crack propagation were found in accordance with different dependence of crack length on the number of cycles: the first stage of accelerating growth and the second stage of steady-state motion. Phenomenological models describing an acceleration of crack growth on the first stage and a constant velocity on the second are suggested. It was also shown that during the first stage a crack moves directly along one of persistent slip bands (PSBs) and the propagation direction frequently changes during the second stage. This behavior can be explained semi-quantitatively in the framework of the Essman Gosele Mughrabi model of the PSB structure.
