Anisotropic diffusion of the state of polarization in optical fibers with randomly varying birefringence

Polarization diffusion in communication fibers is studied. Diffusion of the states of polarization in an optical fiber is found to be anisotropic on the surface of the Poincar{acute e} sphere. The predicted anisotropy has significant implications for nonlinear evolution in long-distance communication systems. {copyright} {ital 1995 Optical Society of America.}
