We derive the Ginzburg-Landau equation for two-dimensional {ital d}-wave superconductors with fourfold symmetry. The two {ital d}-wave components of the order parameter with {ital d}{sub {ital x}{sup 2}{minus}{ital y}{sup 2}} and {ital d}{sub {ital xy}} symmetry are mixed by the component of a magnetic field perpendicular to the two-dimensional plane. The mixing of the two components causes a significant paramagnetic effect in the strong-field region. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
