In the field of Childhood Lead Poisoning there is a growing awareness that testing of children`s blood to prevent lead poisoning is not a totally satisfactory program. Most chronic low level lead poisoning is now recognized to be primarily caused by normal hand-to-mouth activity. Where soil and housedust contain high levels of lead, ingestion of lead by 1--3 year-olds is an inescapable consequence. It is therefore necessary to determine the level of lead in a child`s home environment before the child ingests enough dust and soil to raise its blood lead to a level of concern.
