Upward flow in a uniformly heated parallel plate channel at low Reynolds number was studied experimentally. The flow pattern was observed by the dye-injection method and the streamwise distribution of the heat-transfer coefficient was measured in the same time. The flow was laminar throughout the entire channel when the effect of buoyancy was relatively small. However, streak line of the dye began to fluctuate sinusoidally halfway through the channel when the effect of buoyancy became large, and then flow became turbulent. The wall temperatures also oscillated sinusoidally and the heat-transfer coefficient increased rapidly prior to transition. The effects of Reynolds number and modified Grashof number upon the condition for transition were clarified. The heat-transfer characteristics in the turbulent flow region were also examined.
