The addition of small amounts of Ag ({approximately}0.1at%) is known to enhance the age hardening response of Al-Cu-Mg alloys with high Cu:Mg ratios by promoting a uniform dispersion of {Omega} precipitates. The composition of {Omega} is close to Al{sub 2}Cu but the role of Mg and Ag in its nucleation is poorly understood. Recent advances in field emission technology has allowed high resolution electron microscopy (HREM) and EDS with a spatial resolution of {approximately}1--2nm to be performed on the same microscope, such that precipitate identification and interface morphology can be correlated in exact coincidence with the EDS results. The authors report one such study on the chemical distribution in {Omega} phase in order to determine the location of Mg and Ag.
