The new one-dimensional quaternary metal thiophosphate KNb{sub 2}PS{sub 10} has been synthesized by using a eutectic mixture of KVCl/LiCl and structurally characterized. The structure of KNb{sub 2}PS{sub 10} is closely related to that of Nb{sub 2}PS{sub 10} and comprises infinite one-dimensional chains composed by NbS{sub 8} and PS{sub 4} polyhedra. These chains are separated from one another by K{sup +} cations. A chain may be formulated as {sub {infinity}}{sup 1}[Nb{sup 4+}{sub 2}P{sup 5+}(S{sub 2}){sup 2{minus}}{sub 3}(S{sup 2{minus}}){sub 4}{sup {minus}}].
