The problem of pulse propagation in a medium consisting of two-level atoms with arbitrary detuning of the field frequency the frequency of the atomic subsystem and arbitrary ratio of the pulse duration and the period of the optical oscillations is investigated using the complete (untruncated) system of Maxwell-Bloch equations, it is shown that self-consistent solutions of this problem exist and the pulse profile and its dependence on different parameters of the medium are determined. 15 refs.
