Activation of a C{sub 5}Me{sub 5} ligand on reaction of [(C{sub 5}Me{sub 5}){sub 2}ZrMe({eta}{sup 5}:{eta}{sup 3}-C{sub 5}Me{sub 4}(CH{sub 2}CH{sub 2}CHCHCH{sub 2}))]{sub +} (2). Formation of 2 proceeds via elimination of 2-pentene from an observable {eta}{sup 3}-allyl intermediate, followed by trapping of the putative tetramethylfulvene product by diene insertion. Stable Lewis-base-free {eta}{sup 3}-allyl complexes, [Cp`{sub 2}Zr({eta}{sup 3}-CH{sub 2}C(Me)CH{sub 2})]{sup +} (Cp` = C{sub 5}Me{sub 5} (3b), (Me{sub 3}C)C{sub 5}H{sub 4} (3c)), are obtained with 1,2-propadiene. 24 refs., 1 fig.
