Technical assessment of FUJI-1 closed-loop testing

An analytical study was performed to evaluate conversion of the FUJI-1 blowdown test facility, located at Tokyo Institute of Technology, to a continuous closed cycle MHD test facility. The facility is to be operated continuously for up to 10 hours, during which time argon is recirculated through the MHD generator in a closed loop. The results of analysis show that conversion of the FUJI-1 facility for closed cycle operation is feasible. The analytical study focuses on evaluation of the system infrastructure required to deliver a continuous supply of heated argon to the MHD generator. Argon is continuously recirculated through the MHD generator. The system infrastructure studied in this report includes two high temperature heat exchangers, argon gas coolers, argon compressor, evacuation and fill equipment, control and isolation valves, and the control system. High temperature argon is continuously supplied to the channel using two high temperature heat exchangers, which are alternated in service. Each heat exchanger is on-line for 10 minutes and then reheated during the 10 minutes that the companion heat exchanger is on-line. The operation of the MHD generator was treated as a black box, which produces a step change in pressure and temperature. The analytical study includes analysis of the individual components and the overall system operation, as orchestrated by a control system. Key facets of system operation include initiation of argon flow through the channel, start of power extraction, high temperature heat exchanger switching, pressure change, and termination of flow through the channel. Mathematical modeling was performed for the pebble bed and cored brick heat exchangers, which showed that the desired generator inlet temperatures can be obtained, if the pebble bed heat exchanger is modified.
