The contractual objectives of the MHD Seed Regeneration Project are: (1) to perform a proof-of-concept (POC) level test using the TRW Econoseed process to regenerate spent Eastern (high sulfur) coal-derived seed obtained from the University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI) Bottoming Cycle POC unit with greater than 90% recovery/regeneration of potassium, (2) to perform laboratory scale tests of regeneration of spent Western (low sulfur) coal-derived seed, (3) to assess the almost 250,000 datum obtained during testing, and (4) to utilize this data to forecast the cost of regeneration for these two types of seed with the goal of reducing costs (1) over that of purchased seed and (2) to 20% less than the cost of installing a flue gas desulfurization unit - all at 300 MW{sub t} scale. The first objective has been attained. The Econoseed process has been demonstrated at a 1 to 5 MW, scale at the Seed Regeneration Proof-of-Concept Facility (SRPF) at TRW`s San Juan Capistrano Test Site (CTS) in California. This proof-of-concept demonstration has resulted in: (1) greater than 95% potassium recovery while producing 12 tons (dry basis) of regenerated seed in the form of a concentrated liquid potassium formate which is ready for shipment to the Component Development and Integration Test Facility (CDIF) in Butte, Montana for power train testing, and (2) the attainment of 85% conversion of carbon monoxide to calcium formate (seed regenerating chemical) with over 95% CO conversion as the goal for the concluding tests. Testing of the 12 tons of regenerated seed at the CDIF will determine whether potassium formate is an adequate or perhaps improved form of regenerated potassium for power generation.
