The {sup 14}CO{sub 2} and the total airborne {sup 14}C releases from two Swedish light-water reactors, the boiling water reactor (BWR) Ringhals 1 and the pressurized water reactor (PWR) Ringhals 4, have been analyzed using accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). Five samples of air from each stack, each sample collected without interruption for a period of two weeks during normal operation, showed that of the total {sup 14}C effluents, on average 93% for the BWR and 14% for the PWR were released as {sup 14}CO{sub 2}. For the PWR the {sup 14}CO{sub 2} fractions were also measured in seven two-week samples in connection with an outage period. Increased {sup 14}C releases and {sup 14}CO{sub 2} fractions were observed before and during the outage.
