Hydrogen peroxide provides an opportunity to decrease usage of chlorine and chlorine derivatives such as chlorine dioxide in pulp bleaching operations. Bleaching with alkaline hydrogen peroxide or mixed peracids may be safely performed in titanium or stainless steel equipment provided proper care is taken. For mill water with calcium levels of 10 to 20 ppm, the pH and temperature limits are 11.2 and 80 C respectively. In mixed peracids service, the key to safe operation is good mixing of the peracid and pulp streams. Both titanium and stainless steel resist corrosion in dilute peracids at elevated temperatures.
