Mercury speciation results for power plant flue gases have only recently been determined because of the lack of gas sampling methods capable of speciating mercury. A bench-scale test program was conducted to investigate the gas-phase reactions of mercury. A mercury containing gas stream was prepared and reacted with typical FGD components such as SO{sub 2}, O{sub 2} and HCl in a bench-scale reactor. Analysis of the reactor outlet gas showed that elemental mercury reacted with the simulated flue gas to produce oxidized mercury. The extent of oxidation was shown to be influenced by the presence of SO{sub 2} and O{sub 2} as well as the reaction temperature. The presence of HCl showed little effect during these tests. Additional tests investigated the ability of impinger solutions to speciate elemental and oxidized mercury in synthetic gas streams. Results showed that standard Method 29 impingers could separate elemental and oxidized mercury from a nitrogen stream. Several other impinger solutions were identified for testing at the pilot level.
