The mixed Mode I/II fracture toughnesses of two 2034 Al type alloys with different manganese contents were evaluated. The mixed Mode I/II fracture behavior of the two alloys was found to be different. Alloy I which had <0.1 wt % Mn content exhibited a significant reduction in total fracture toughness with increasing Mode II loading contribution whereas Alloy 2 which had 1.08% Mn content showed only a marginal reduction in total fracture toughness under mixed Mode I/II loading. The results are discussed in light of the microstructures, fracture mechanisms and deformation field ahead of the crack tip under mixed mode loading and are compared to earlier results on Mode I/III fracture.
