The combination of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) methods is a useful tool for solving a number of industrial problems. The two instruments work together in micro-chemical analysis applications, providing a broad characterization of materials. And computer software can be used to coordinate SEM and EDS operations, to provide rapid analyses of both geometrical and chemical aspects of material features. Consequently, SEM/EDS analysis is often the key to identification and understanding of mechanisms underlying material performance. This article describes a range of SEM/EDS methods available for material analysis, and illustrates their utility in helping to solve materials problems in industry.
