Maraven has evaluated the use of various additives to improve recovery factors and economics of steam soak projects. Enhancing steam soak recovery is important since it will allow extending the duration of this process, thereby postponing the implementation of more costly displacement processes such as steamdrive. The technique of injecting additives with steam was developed by conducting pilot field tests based on numerical simulation studies and laboratory research. The preliminary results obtained in the field tests have shown the benefits of this technique. The additives used in these tests were: surfactants to increase vertical steam distribution and to improve the flow of heated oil, solvents to increase oil mobility, and natural gas to increase the heated area and promote reactivation of the solution gas drive mechanism. Solvent injection with steam, has resulted in initial oil rates 50% higher than those using only steam. However, a more comprehensive evaluation is necessary to definitely quantify the improvement of soaking wells with additives.
