This paper discusses the technical progress of a U.S. Department of Energy Innovative Clean Coal Technology project demonstrating advanced wall-fired combustion techniques for the reduction of nitrogen oxide (NO{sub x}) emissions from coal-fired boilers. The primary objective of the demonstration is to determine the long-term NO{sub x} reduction performance of advanced overfire air (AOFA), low NO{sub x} burners (LNB), and advanced digital control/optimization methodologies applied in a stepwise fashion to a 500 MW boiler. The focus of this paper is on the design and results to date from the advanced digital control/optimization phase of the project.
