Smart pigging philosophy
Smart Pigging is a cost effective way of determining the true integrity of a pipeline system. It is a useful tool in protecting the environment and public safety. However, it has its limitations so it does not totally replace the use of other methods to monitor pipeline integrity. Nor should it be considered the only way to monitor pipeline integrity. Information from a smart pig metal loss survey can be used for optimizing maintenance and can be used sometimes to avoid the need for hydrotesting. The paper presents the author`s viewpoint on the current state of in-line inspection technology. The issue of considering the sizing accuracy of the in-line inspection tool in monitoring corrosion defect growth and making repair decisions will be covered by the paper. 52 refs, 2 figs.
