We present experimental and theoretical discussions of the scattering of spin-polarized electrons from a bilayer of Fe on the W(100) surface. At selected beam energies, we report measurements of the angular variation of the intensity of the specular beam, along with both the spin-orbit and exchange asymmetries. Through use of relativistic multiple-scattering theory, we have analyzed the data to obtain information on the structure of the Fe bilayer, and on its magnetic character. It is demonstrated that the spin-orbit asymmetry is a very sensitive structural probe.
