Operation of a low NO{sub x} swirl burner: Effect of burner parameters on coal particle behavior
- Pennsylvania State Univ., University Park, PA (United States). Energy and Fuels Research Center
Advances in combustion modeling and numerical computation have contributed significantly to the design of industrial burners. Modeling has also helped to increase understanding and solve problems associated with the combustion, aerodynamics and heat transfer in fossil-fuel fired boilers. The purpose of this work was to use numerical modeling to determine the effect of various burner parameters on coal particle behavior in an industrial boiler in order to retrofit a low NOx pulverized coal burner for a natural gas/fuel oil burner. The parameters analyzed included the positions of the secondary/tertiary air rings relative to the fuel nozzle, the inlet velocity profiles, the ratio of the secondary/tertiary air flows, the swirler type, and the swirl number.
