The authors are evaluating ultrafine particle (UFP) catalysts in slurry-phase with the aim to develop active and selective synthesis of hydrocarbons and oxygenates. The selected particle size (< 100 nm) represents a boundary between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. Two Fe-based materials with mean particle diameter (MPD) of 3 nm and 50 nm were selected and initially tested for Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis. Mossbauer and Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) measurements were carried-out on quenched catalyst samples. The correlation between spectroscopic data and catalyst performance is discussed.
