Production and use of activated char for combined SO{sub 2}/NO{sub x} removal
- Illinois State Geological Survey, Champaign, IL (United States)
Carbon adsorbents have been shown to remove sulfur oxides from flue gas, and also serve as a catalyst for reduction of nitrogen oxides at temperatures between 80 and 150 C. The overall objective of this study was to determine whether Illinois Basin coal is a suitable feedstock for the production of an activated char that could be used to remove SO{sub 2}/NO{sub x} from combustion flue gas. The initial focus was to identify process conditions for production of activated char with optimal SO{sub 2} removal characteristics. Chars with varying pore structure and surface chemistry were prepared from an Illinois coal under a wide range of pyrolysis and activation conditions, and tested for their ability to remove SO{sub 2} from simulated flue gas. A novel char preparation method was developed to produce activated chars with SO{sub 2} adsorption capacities significantly greater than that of a commercial activated carbon. No correlation was found between the SO{sub 2} adsorption capacity and N{sub 2} BET surface area of the char. The number of free adsorption sites determined by temperature programmed desorption was used to explain SO{sub 2} adsorption behavior. Based on these results, a new mechanism for SO{sub 2} adsorption on carbon and conversion to H{sub 2}SO{sub 4} is proposed.
