Evaluation of sulfation rates using transient emission profiles from a fluidized combustor
- Iowa State Univ., Ames, IA (United States). Mechanical Engineering Dept.
Limestone is an inexpensive and commonly used SO{sub 2} sorbent in fluidized bed combustors (FBC`s). The reaction mechanisms for the calcination and subsequent sulfation of limestone have been the subject of significant experimental investigations, but not always under conditions that adequately simulate the environment of actual combustion equipment. This study focuses on sulfation and is conducted by analyzing transient SO{sub 2} emission profiles from a laboratory-scale FBC. Exhaust emissions are analyzed by a non-dispersive infrared SO{sub 2} analyzer and yield time constants for the reaction. Concurrently, the authors are developing a computational model that describe the reaction processes. Preliminary work suggests that the sulfation process is limited by pore-plugging in the limestone particles. The goal of this study is to show the viability of using transient gas analysis to characterize sorbents under realistic combustion conditions.
