A PC-based program for empirical prediction of ash deposition propensities in pulverized coal (pc)-fired utilities, has been developed. The program is based on the concept of combining a bulk ash chemistry index (characterizing the potential coal ash chemistry) and a plant parameter (characterizing the system configuration and/or operation), and compares this actual operational point with experience-based (empirical) values. As part of a currently running research project on mineral transformations in pc-fired utilities, ash deposition propensities at two power stations in Denmark firing coals of different rank and origin were predicted. When compared qualitatively to samples of coal, fly ash and deposits collected and analyzed by CCSEM, XRD and SEM-EDX, the theoretical predictions confirmed the very low ash deposition rate observed in the full-scale combustion tests.
