Model tests to determine the ultimate bearing capacity of strip foundations supported by a stronger sand layer underlain by a weaker clay with geogrid as reinforcement at the interface are presented. The effect of the existence of a continuous rectangular void in the clay layer below the center of the foundation was examined. The variation of the bearing capacity ratio with the depth of the void has been determined.
