Gas hydrate formation can be a serious problem in offshore oil and gas development projects. Exploitation of marginal or aging oil fields requires the implementation of procedures for the prevention of hydrate formation. Because the use of methanol, a common hydrate inhibitor, raises environmental concerns, attention is focused on either the delay of hydrate nucleation or prevention of hydrate particle agglomeration during the processing and/or transport of the hydrocarbon resource. The term kinetic inhibition encompasses these two procedures to eliminate the consequences of hydrate formation. This paper reviews the status of current knowledge on the kinetics of gas hydrate formation and discusses the aspects of gas hydrate kinetic inhibition.
