Superdeformation studies of {sup 192}+Tl
- and others
States in the superdeformed (SD) well of the odd-odd nucleus {sup 192}Tl have been studied via the {sup 160}Gd({sup 37}Cl,5n) reaction at 178 MeV. The experiment was performed using early implementation of Gammasphere in which three fold {gamma}-ray coincidences were detected by 36 HPGe detectors. Four SD bands are clearly identified as belonging to the nucleus {sup 192}Tl. Two of these bands exhibit nearly constant dynamic moments of inertia, {pi}{sup 2}, as a function of average {h_bar}{omega} over the range 0.15 to 0.35 MeV. This result supports the earlier proposal that these {open_quotes}flat{close_quotes} bands correspond to quasiparticle configurations involving the occupation of the {pi}i{sup 13/2} and {nu}j{sup 15/2}intruder orbitals, which would block both proton and neutron alignment. The other two observed SD bands each display an increasing {pi}{sup 2} as a function of frequency which is more typical of other SD bands in this region. The behavior of all bands along with the assignment of possible quasiparticle configurations will be discussed.
